Caring for large housing estates and their inhabitants
For Anne Lacaton, Jean-Philippe Vassal, Frédéric Druot, and Christophe Hutin, large housing estates are an “exceptional territory” whose transformation provides an efficient and qualitative cost-effective response to housing needs. This position, which is radically opposed to current urban renewal policies, which are more inclined towards demolition-reconstruction, is expressed in the Grand Parc district of Bordeaux, where they are developing a process with the public housing provider Aquitanis that has been validated by two previous constructions.
Thanks to conservatories added to the facade, the dwellings gain in surface area, comfort, and luminosity and offer inhabitants a new quality of life. As Philippe Ruault’s photos show, this minimal and repetitive architectural design is subsumed in the diversity of uses that it offers. The simplicity characterizing this project is paradoxically out of the ordinary.
